GREEN LIGHT! €20 Million Funding Announced For Midlands Hospice!
The government has announced €20 Million in funding for the construction of a 20-bed facility at Tullamore Regional Hospital. The Midlands Region has been fighting for it’s own Centre of Excellence for decades.
This is great news for a campaign and story that has been running for a long time. Getting a Centre of Excellence for the Midlands will mean Tullamore will become a hub for the provision of specialist palliative care services across the Midlands, including day care, outpatient, inpatient and community services.
Five Hospice groups: Laois Hospice, SAVE for Longford Hospice, North Westmeath Hospice CLG Mullingar, Offaly Hospice and South Westmeath Hospice have tirelessly campaigned and fundraised for many years. Alongside these groups, The Irish Cancer Society, Think Ahead – Irish Hospice Foundation and the hooves4hospice campaign with The Lions Club International Foundation have never stopped raising awareness.
TD Barry Cowen has said “Politics has its ups and downs. It has its good days and bad days. Today is a good day.” He went on to say “I am proud of the role I played with colleagues in influencing this decision.”
The new 20-bed unit fulfils a Programme for Government commitment to have a hospice serving every region in the country.
The development is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.
